Does the past affect the present?

Do our thoughts and actions affect our future selves?

Our past defines who we are today! The mistakes we made to the achievements we have worked for, have all been impacted by our past. Without all of our countries wars and political differences, do you really think everything would be exactly like it is right now? Even the technology we have today has evolved and improved from our past. The racial differences between us, yes has not been completely resolved; but because of our past has greatly improved.

I think we all can agree on the fact that wars are bad. Its what we can learn from them that changes our present day and future. Take the Holocaust, Pearl Harbor bombing, and 9/11; all these events changed our country in ways no one thought possible. For starters the Holocaust being as bad as it was taught us, well for one dictators SUCK! But also that everyone has different beliefs, its how we act and interact with those beliefs that affect us. Without the terrorist of 9/11 our airport security would probably not be as intense. 16 years ago before 9/11 we did not even need to take our shoes off in the security line. As bad as wars are they still affect our future both negatively and positively.  What's important is what we can learn from them so that it does not repeat itself.

Our past has also been a big influence on our technological advances. We went from flip phones to smart phones in a short amount of time. Just about 12 years or so ago we had little iPod's the size of a thumb, and all you could do on it was download and listen to music. Now a days our phones are like  cameras, computers, and communication devices, etc. all rolled into one. The past has changed the way we function throughout our everyday life. Sometimes we don't even realize how advance our technology has gotten over the years.  Without the past we would not have the technology advances that we do, because the past is what helped us build and improve the devices that we have today. Basically what I am saying is, we should all just take a moment to thank Steve Jobs for inviting Apple products!

Racial differences has also evolved from our past to present selves. We used to live in a world when blacks and whites were completely divided; the hatred between them was astounding! If Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks (and many others) had not stood up for what they believed in, and persevered through all the negativity towards them we would not have the community we do today. The truth is, I am not gonna lie and say all racial differences and problems have been solved, because they haven't. But what we need to realize is over time we have grown racially closer together as a country. The past has given us that push/shove that we needed to go into the right direction. Now it is up to us to take our past, and learn/grow upon it so that we can hopefully in the future be even more integrated, diverse, and socially accepted as a country.

Without our past we would not know what makes us, us. The past defines who we are and what we have come from. Throughout our history we should take note of the good and learn from the bad. As humans we tend to live in the past. We like to think "oh well if I did this differently, then maybe this would have happened". It is important that we do not overthink and live too into our past. We take our mistakes and horrifying moments and turn them into teachable life lessons. Remember the good and the progress we have made over the years, and continue to be hopeful and optimistic for a brighter future!

You mentioned how taking our shoes off at airport security is an effect of the 9/11 attacks. Do you think this is still necessary 16 years later? Some might suggest that we can never go back, while others say our responses should adjust with present threat levels. Afterall, we went many many years without the "shoes off" policy. Do you think we could/should ever go back to that?

    1. I believe that the shoes off policy is not completely necessary. Technology has improved over the years, including the airport security devices we use. I think we should continue to be extremely carful while checking people through security, but because of how advanced our technology has come I do not think it is necessary for everyone to take their shoes off. I also believe that because in the past people have tried to sneak stuff in through their shoes and failed, no one would be dumb enough to repeat a failure!....But I also would not put it past us. All in all not everyone should need to take their shoes off, but airport security should still be super carful when letting people through.
